What is UCI CanSat?

The UCI CanSat team is a senior design project team that competes in the international CanSat Competition, an engineering competition hosted by the American Astronautical Society. Each year, we design, manufacture, and launch a satellite payload model called a CanSat, which must meet a set of mission objectives and requirements set by the competition.

We are a high-performance team, placing 4th internationally and 2nd domestically in last year’s competition and receiving Dean’s Choice Award in 2022 and 2025. We have also secured sponsorships and mentorships from large companies such as Blue Origin.

Our team is relatively small (10 engineering members maximum), which gives each member opportunities to learn and directly contribute to the project. Engineering members are organized into three subteams—Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls. We also recruit interns, who shadow their assigned subteam and design/fabricate their own engineering projects.

If you want to learn more, we encourage you to visit our website as well as the competition website. Feel free to email us at [email protected] with any questions.

How do I apply?

The application has two parts: the written application (located here) and the interview. The written application will officially close Friday, May 16 at 11:59PM, but will be reviewed on a rolling basis (this means that **all open positions may be filled before the deadline—**apply early!). If you are selected for an interview, we'll send you more information by email.

We look forward to your application :)
